postdocs-2015

Two part-time postdoctoral researcher positions are available in the laboratory
of Dr. Mark Holder in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the
University of Kansas (Lawrence, KS). Both are positions are in bioinformatics.
If one applicant is hired for both positions, then the duration of full time
employment would be 2 years, with an additional period of part-time employment
possible for a third year.

The first position is covers 40%-time for 3 years. The focus of the work is to
develop and test approximate Bayesian computation methods for analyzing host-
parasite coevolution in a biogeographically explicit manner.
The research requires expertise in computational statistics, phylogenetics,
and biogeography.
Candidates will be expected to have completed a PhD in Biology, Statistics,
Computer Science or a related field.
Expertise in either Python, C, or C++ (C++11 or C++14) is required, with a
strong preference for candidates who have experience in both Python and C++.
Because the position is less than half-time, this position does not include
health insurance benefits.

The second position is a part of the Open Tree of Life project, and will
primarily entail work on the software infrastructure of that program. While the
work will include numerous opportunities for novel, publishable research in
bioinformatics and evolutionary biology, the primary tasks are the
implementation of software to sustain and improve the core infrastructure of
the Open Tree of Life project. The infrastructure to be developed and
maintained includes databases for storing phylogenetic estimates, supertree
tools, software for automatically updating previous estimates of
relationships, tools for assessing conflicte between trees, and web-programming
to expose the phylogenetic information. This project is collaborative (with
academics and software developers at other institutions), so the candidate for
the postdoctoral position at KU only needs to be capable of contributing to
one of the previously mentioned efforts.
Candidates will be expected to have completed a PhD in Biology, Statistics,
Computer Science or a related field.
Preference will be given to candidates who can contribute to more than one of
those core tasks. Proficiency in Python, C, C++, Java or JavaScript are required.
A strong preference will be given to candidates who are proficient in C or C++
and at least one of the other languages mentioned above.
This position could be a up to 60%-time position; thus, the position (if over 50%
time) would include health insurance benefits.

Applicants interested can apply via the EEB postdoctoral researcher pool using
the "Apply to job" link on:

That webpage contains additional information about the positions, hiring policies
and the process for evaluating potential candidates.

Please indicate in your application that you are applying to work with Mark Holder
and indicate which of the positions you are intersted in (or "both" if you are
interested in both research projects mentioned above).
